It's the most wonderful time of the year!

Hello Families!

With the holiday season upon us we are extremely busy in 3B! Here is what is happening in our classroom for the remainder of the 2016 year!

Important Information:

  • Scholastic book orders were sent home last week along with a coupon for a free book with a $10 purchase. If you wish to secretly order books for your child for the holidays please let me know and we can arrange a pickup.

  • It is beginning to get a lot colder outside. Please encourage your student to dress appropriately for outdoor recess. It may even be a good idea to have them keep an extra hat and set of gloves in their locker if they forget.

  • Many students are missing gym due to not having gym shoes. Please send an extra pair to school to be kept in your student's locker.

  • Our holiday party will take place on December 22nd. There will also be a hour early release that day.

  • Got Boxtops?? We would love to have them so we can win the boxtop competition! Send them to school with your student at any time.

Math:

We have begun multiplication! This is new to many students. We have discussed two ways to solve multiplication problems; arrays and repeated addition. We will be working on multiplication and division for the remainder of the 2016 school year. It would be beneficial for you to begin practicing multiplication facts with your students. You could go old school and use flashcards or use websites where your student can play games and learn facts at the same time.

Reading:

We are full swing into our folktale unit! We are finishing up fables and will soon be learning about myths and fairy tales. Ask your student about the stories we have read!

Spelling:

Please remind your student that spelling homework is due each Friday and should be checked and signed by an adult. If your student misplaces their spelling words they can be found under the ELA tab on the website. You can also find a PDF copy of the reading long on this page as well.

Writing:

Earlier this week the students brought home a letter explaining that Mrs. Claus and Elvin the Elf need our help! Santa's Christmas Eve suit has had an accident...let's just say it may be a little too small this year. They need us to help design a perfect new suit for him! Please help your student create a design using the Santa printout attached to the letter. You can use paper, fabric, felt, glitter, cotton balls, yarn; the sky is the limit! Please bring back your design no later than December 12th. Please keep in mind that Santa travels to all parts of the world and goes up and down chimneys. Make sure his suit will not have him catch on fire and will keep him warm in the snow and cool in the heat. The students will not have time to create their design in school. We will then be writing letters to Mrs. Claus and Elvin the Elf to explain why our new design should be the one created and fit for Santa! If you have any questions please let me know. The students are very excited about this opportunity!

Science:

We are beginning a new unit on Monday! We will be learning about habitats. Last week I had asked the students to bring in a shoe box. We will be creating habitat dioramas! Each student will choose a habitat that they wish to create. I have tons of construction paper at school that all students may use to create their dioramas. However, if you student wishes to bring in/purchase extra materials for their project they are more than welcome to. Some fun things you may want to consider bringing in/purchasing may include cotton balls, tissue paper, plastic animals that live in that habitat, sand, textured paper, scrapbook paper with sky/water/ground design on it,fabric, etc. If you need ideas of what to bring in you can always send me a message or simply google 'habitat dioramas'. Students will be choosing the habitat they wish to create next week. We will begin making these dioramas on 12/13. Please have all supplies and the shoe box at school by this date.

As always, please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or concerns. I am here to help your student grow, learn and have a fantastic 3rd grade year!!

Sincerely,

Miss Bleidorn
