Quarter Two: We are almost through with you!

Hello 2021 and hello 5B Families!

Happy New Year! I hope you all had a wonderful winter break and are ready to tackle a new year. Here in 5B we came back this week ready to go and ready to do great things.

Here are some things you should know or be on the lookout as this quarter ends this week:

General Reminders:

  • Scholastic Book orders were sent home today. If you are interested in ordering please order online and they will be shipped directly to the school.

  • Many students have an at-home Social Studies retake that they need to complete. This is due Tuesday the 19th at the very latest. They are able to use their textbook and notes. A parent signature is required before turning in the retake.

  • As the quarter ends, retakes on tests/quizzes/assignments are due! Ask your child or take a look on Eschool to see if they have any they need to retake.

  • Take a look to the right to see the AMAZING holiday *ugly* sweaters that everyone created!

Subject Updates:

  • Writing: As I look back at all our creative writing assignments this year, I am so proud of how much everyone has grown! We are finishing up our last mysterious creative writing assignment this week. This assignment is being completed independently with little to no teacher/peer editing help. We will then be moving on to nonfiction writing for the second half of the school year.

  • Math: We are in full swing with fractions! There are many steps when adding and subtracting, so practice is key. You may see more homework than usual due to this. Please also continue to practice math facts to help with fractions!

  • Reading: Our topic for reading groups these past few weeks has been civil rights. By reading both fiction and nonfiction texts we were able to learn about different perspectives from different historians and characters.

  • Vocabulary: Our last test of the quarter is THURSDAY! Please make sure you are signing contracts and help promote good study habits at home.

  • Social Studies: We just began our final project for the quarter. Some students are working on an ABC book while others are creating their own Periodic Table. Up next we will be starting the scientific method.

  • RTI: Students are working on a multitude of topics for RTI. Since we, unfortunately, do not have reading specialists to support us this year, many students are working on a reading program called Lexia. Other students are using Khan Academy and Raz Kids.

  • Read Aloud: We are halfway through the first Harry Potter book and the class is LOVING it! It is really fun to see students bring in wands and their own books to use during read-aloud. To go along with the magic of this book, we have sorted into Hogwarts Houses. They work together to earn points for weekly and yearly rewards. Ask your child what house they are in!
